That said, there was a period around the end of WWII when many pistol makers, particularly in Germany and formerly Nazi-occupied countries, took advantage of the breakdown of law and order and hurriedly cranked out many non-serialized and otherwise non-standard pistols to sell to Allied soldiers as souvenirs. Many European countries have never had the laissez-faire attitude towards firearms that characterized prewar America (and, to a lesser extent, Canada) witness the abundant government proof marks on most European-made firearms. I believe that some European countries had very strict laws requiring serial numbers in the prewar period, and pistol makers did not want to lose access to those markets. ![]() Same is true of guns made in other countries as well.ĪFAIK almost all European small-caliber pistols were very consistently serialized except during the time period right around the end of WWII. Some guns didn't have serial numbers on them here, until the Fedl Govt here began requiring them on all guns. ![]()
